Wow, man, New York City. Parker had expected a lot, but everything he had so far witnessed made him feel like his standards were blown out of the water. He had only been in the city for four days, and much of that time was spent moving into his new room, learning his way around the school, and applying for jobs. Everything felt so overwhelming, but in the best way possible, like the feeling you got as a little kid when you stepped into a giant candy store. All your senses were maxed out and you just felt so alive and wired...why had Parker ever thought Detroit was a neat city? It was a gray, dingy poop hole compared to New York City.

In the short time he had been in the city, Parker had already made a long list of things he needed to see. He swore that if he was in a cartoon, it would be one of those scrolls that unfurl and go on for a few miles. On the top of that list was visiting the Central Park Conservatory Gardens. Despite being told numerous times that "flowers were for girls", Parker freaking loved nature. To think that a little nothing seed could grow up through packed soil (ok but how did it know which way was up??? like whoa little seed dude, you rock!) and into a gigantic, blooming, flowering plant just blew Parker's mind. When he was feeling philosophic, he liked to think that his music career was like a seed and one would one day bloom into a giant success...yeah, that'd be nice. Parker always supposed if that didn't work out, there would be some sort of reason for it that he'd figure out one day, and he could just fall back on teaching or something. Little kids were the shit, it would be the coolest to teach them music.

In a throwback mood, Parker put on his headphones and cranked Green Day as he entered the subway. It was still a little tricky to figure out, like what was up with all the different lines and shit? He had to find someone to ask for directions, and they had just kind of sighed at him, "really dude?" written all over their face. After that, Parker kind of zoned out on the ride over, paying major attention to the hairy guy playing guitar. Like, okay, that was chill. Parker briefly considered bringing his guitar onto the subway, but he didn't want to step on the other guy's turf. He had a little cup for tips and everything! Nah, Parker would just find somewhere else, it wasn't a big deal, especially considering the size of his new campus.

"Do you have the time / To listen to me whine / About nothing and everything all at once?" Yes, hell yes. Parker hummed along, tapping his fingers on his knees like they were drums. Even though his fingers were kept busy by a guitar most of the time, he had that annoying habit of drumming his fingers on everything, no matter the situation. It drove his family absolutely bonkers whenever they had the time to all sit down for a meal. Glancing up, Parker noticed it was nice to get off the subway. He stood up and stumbled a bit as the subway lurched to a halt. There was no telling how long it would take for Parker to get used to that, but he just laughed it off. The subway was just keeping him on his toes, both literally and metaphorically.

Parker made his way to the gardens, not able to stop his mouth from dropping open. "Dude..." Not only was it beautiful, but it was big. The only way his day could get better was if he had some oreo ice cream, which was the epitome of everything good and holy in the world. After walking around for a while, taking pictures of everything, of course, Parker found an empty bench that he plopped down on, just staring at the giant tree in front of him. It looked like it was perfect for climbing, but the fence in front of it suggested otherwise. Well, this bench will have to do, Parker thought. After looking through all the pictures he had taken, he reopened the camera app and took a quick selfie for snapchat so that all his friends back home would know he was still alive. Not that he had many friends back home....Everyone was so brash and plasticky, it was incredibly lame. Parker mostly just kept to himself, but he promised himself that he wouldn't do that here. New York was awesome, and the people here had to be equally as awesome. Putting on his sunglasses, Parker leaned his head back and eventually dozed off in the afternoon sun.

xxx

With a jolt, Parker sat up as quick as a flash, sunglasses falling off his face. "Haha, I thought I was falling." Those falling dreams always got him good. Rubbing his eyes and wiping away the little trail of drool from the corner of his mouth, Parker checked his phone. Oh, damn, he had been sleeping for three hours. Parker wasn't in a rush to head back until his stomach started rumbling, because hunger was the ultimate motivator. Standing up and stretching, Parker started down the path to his right. Nice he thought, nodding his head in admiration at the flowers lining the path. After a few minutes, he noticed that this wasn't the way he had come into the park, and had no idea where he was going. Oh god. Stopping in an open circular area with a few other people, Parker pulled out his phone, worriedly biting at his lip. Ok, so, the gardens were six square acres...nice. And there was no map that he could find....nice. Glancing around, Parker noticed a girl who looked about his age. Maybe she went to Baum, too? Walking up, Parker ran a hand through his hair and said, "Hey, so I'm new to the city and I go to Baum Academy and I'm totally losth, dude. D'ya think you could help me?" Parker's lip ring had made him develop a bit of a lisp, but he refused to take it out.

now i don't know where i am
& i don't know where i've been

To be honest, Penelope had been going to school in New York City for the past almost-four years now, and she still had no idea what she was doing. She kind of knew the subway and she kind of knew which stop to get off on, but that didn't mean she paid any attention she was on it, and it moved so fast that she often missed her stop and hand to somehow make her way back to where she needed to be. She loved to explore the city and see all the sights, but she got lost 99% of the time and had to call a friend for help getting back to Baum.

Today's sight to see was the Conservatory Garden, because wow flowers were honestly so great. She appropriately put on a flower headband (which wasn't from Nahnie but that was okay), and flower shoes. The tank top she was wearing was... well, it kind of exposed her belly, which made her feel silly, but it was cute and what she felt like wearing. The leggings made it very soft grunge, and that was what she was going for. It also helped that her hair had temporary purple coloring in it, which was absolutely her favorite temporary color to have, except maybe pink, or pretty much any other color.

She decided to go alone today, not wanting to bother her friends. Eddie's allergies got pretty bad around flowers (at least, she had this really funny mental image of him sneezing his glasses off, but it probably wasn't actually a thing) and Estie's leg was super broken, and Ari was somewhere and other than those people, who was she going to ask? No one, that was who! And she could totally go alone. She could be alone yeah, she could watcha sunset on her own. Kate Nash was super great.

But it was not a Kate Nash kind of day! She had "First Day Of My Life" by Bright Eyes on repeat, because oh gosh that song was so cute!! She couldn't handle it, except she had to handle it because she was listening to it and it was such a good song!!! Penelope wondered if she would ever feel like that when she met a cute person, instead of just really just personifying the heart eyes emoji and stumbling over every word she said.

When she got there, she immediatley started wandering, like she did, and noticed a boy sleeping on a bench. Oh wow, so relatable. Wow... he was a cute person. She considered sitting next to him and waking him up, but... Oh gosh, she knew she'd be really awkward about it. Besides, he looked so peacefully cute that she wouldn't dare disturb him.

Skipping along and looking at every flower, stopping to sketch the roses, taking pictures with her phone of ones that looked especially wonderful, she ended up in a circular area, taking a snapchat video of her panning around the area. "Look at all these great flowers, guys," she said, and suddenly noticed the cute sleepy boy looking at his phone and quickly posted the snap to her story, trying to be cool and oh gosh was he walking up to her?

Penelope imagined her eyes turned into hearts at that moment, but also some other feeling arose when he asked her for help, and it was like she was sensing a kindred spirit. He was... lost? Looking around frantically, she realized she also had no idea where she was. Well, honestly, she didn't know what she expected. "Oh, I go to Baum too!!! I'm Penelope, though you can come up with a cool nickname if you want to. And also, I am very lost too, I just realized." She smiled, trying to be cool, she could be cool, and she stuck a hand out to shake his, because that was totally cool. "It's nice to meet cute. You! Nice to meet you." Cue the crashing and burning sound effect and her cheeks flushed a lovely shade of pink and she wanted to hide somewhere.

Parker smiled down at the cute little thing in front of him, like quite literally because he had to be a foot taller than her, which made her little, and she was definitely cute in all meanings of the word. Like, purple hair? Mad respect. And the flower headband thingy was a nice touch. For a moment, Parker had to squelch the little-kid like urge to reach out and touch her hair. It was probably soft. Girls always had nice soft hair...not that Parker had a lot of experience it that area, but whatever. "Nice to meet ya, Pe-lly." A frown formed on Parker's face. Stupid lisp! Cheeks a little pink, Parker apologized. "Sorry, I get tripped up with my words sometimes because of this little thing." Parked flicked the black ring circling his lip, then shrugged. "I kind of like the name Pelly though. I'm gonna call you Pelly!"

A frown formed again. Oh, dude. She was lost too, what kind of luck was that? Whoever was in charge upstairs was getting a good laugh out of Parker today for sure. "Dude that's kind of the worst, but these things happen." Parker shrugged again as Penelope said, "It's nice to meet cute. You! Nice to meet you." A cheeky grin crept onto Parker's face and he scratched at his head, unable to process words for a minute. Pfft, he wasn't cute, like, at all. Did Pelly need to get her eyes checked? She could definitely pull off glasses, which was good, because she needed them if she thought he was cute. "How long have you been at Baum?" Yeah, subject change, just going to casually cruise over what just happened before Parker dissolved into an awkward puddle.

Like a small child, Parker rocked back and forth on his heels, trying to figure out what to do. This garden was HUGE and they were small people. Well, Luke was only small compared to the garden, not to Penelope. He could probably put her on his shoulders and she could lead them out, kind of like in old cartoons where the kids would stack up in a trench coat, only Parker did not own a giant trench coat. "I could maybe fithure out where to go if we got out of here. But like, just to the subway. I wouldn't know where to go from there, like which line to get on or anything, but we could ask someone once we get there! If we get there!" Parker wiggled his figures and made ghost noises. Muahahaha, they were never getting out alive! Just kidding, of course.

now i don't know where i am
& i don't know where i've been

Penelope wanted to scream and jump up and down, because wow that was probably the cutest nickname she had ever gotten!! "That is the cutest nickname I've ever gotten!!" Oh gosh, she couldn't contain it and her arms flailed about and she hopped up on her toes a couple times, her hands covering her mouth and she took a deep breath, cooling it. Yeah, cool. Totally cool.

Sighing, she shrugged, looking up at him. Boy, was he tall. Like, waaaay taller than her, and she never realized how attractive she found height differences until just then. "These things happen to me all the time! I'm always getting lost." Oh gosh, he was gonna think she was weird or stupid or dumb or something! "So like... I know how to handle it, because of my years experience." Her heart wasn't 100% into that statement and she tried to pass it off as a joke.

Actually, she was not handling this well at all, and she was still crashing and burning, but just kept talking. "Since freshman year," she blurted out. Ugh! He was totally just going to walk away from her and find someone else better to help him get back to Baum and he totally noticed how she called him cute and UGH. She wanted to crawl into a hole and die. How was she ever gonna find a cute person to be with if she couldn't talk to anyone she found attractive? Looking down at her feet, she tried to hide how bashful she felt right now but couldn't manage.

Suddenly, she perked up. "Oh!! I know the subway mostly!! I can help us there!!" She looked around, squinting at each little pathway and scrunching up her nose and furrowing her brow in thought. "Okay, let's try this way!!!" Without thinking, she grabbed his hand and led him, practically skipping down a random pathway that looked vaguely familiar. Yes, this was totally going to get them out, good idea.

There was no way that was the cutest nickname she had ever gotten? Like, no, Parker wasn't creative enough to come up with a cute nickname! Other people probably had much better nicknames for her and she was just trying to make him feel better for tripping over his words. "Haha, no way! That can't be true." Pelly was totally full of energy, though, and Parker was digging it. Being a very relaxed person, Parker loved seeing energetic people do their thing, like bouncing up and down. Parker laughed, but not in a mean, condescending way, in a "your adorable antics have amused me in the best way possible and the only way I can express that is by laughing" way.

Ah, another kindred soul, another person getting lost around this gigantic city. Parker never really experienced this because he stuck to the same places back home, but he had a feeling there would be many more instances of getting lost as fuck. "Well, since you know how to handle it, you have to be the leader. I'd probably get us more lost, to be honest." That would not be swell, for sure. When was the garden closing, exactly? What if they got stuck in the garden all night. Parker wasn't totally sure how he should feel about that. On one hand, hell yeah, sleeping outside at night. On the other, hand, though...there was literally nothing comfortable to sleep on. He had a kink in his neck from those damn benches to prove it! Since he wasn't sure if it would be a good thing or a bad thing, he decided to ask Pelly how she felt about it. "What if we got stuck here all night, dude?"

Oh, thank god, man, she knew the subway! Parker would have to remember to ask her to explain the damn thing once they got there. Just as he was saying "sweet," Penelope grabbed his hand and tugged him forward. Parker stumbled a bit as he got his legs into gear, blushing a bit as he caught up with her. Besides Missy, his playground wife from preschool, Parker had only ever had one girlfriend before. That was two years ago, and they had dated for two months before she decided he was lame and moved on to some basketball player. Needless to say, it had been a long time since someone had held his hand. To no surprise, Penelope had nice, soft hands, and Parker was suddenly very aware of the thick calluses covering his fingertips from years of playing guitar. She probably wouldn't mind though, and besides, this was just a friend-thing. Even though they had only just met. Funny how friendships start, though! Parker thought about how cool it would be if they became best friends, because he was starting to get lonely with no one to talk to at Baum, and then he realized that Penelope didn't even know his name yet??? How rude of him! "I'm Parker, by the way. Parker Johnson. My initials spell out PBJ, like the sandwich." Ok, calm down, open book.

As they walked (well, Parker could walk, because his long legs had no issue keeping up with Penelope's near skipping) down the path Pelly had chosen, Parker took in all the sights around him. "Hm, I don't remember seeing this, but all the paths probably intersect all over the place, right?" Parker mentally took note of all of the flowers around them: tulips, magnolias, chrysanthemums. There were many more, but Parker didn't know the names of them. He may have loved flowers but he had a terribly shitty memory when it came to knowing plant names. Taking a break from sucking on his bottom lip (seriously, he needed to kick that habit) to talk, Parker said, "So, what's Baum like? I start classes on Monday and to be honest i'm a little nervous. I grew up going to school with the same people since preschool." And it was annoying as hell, but Parker didn't add that.

now i don't know where i am
& i don't know where i've been

All she could do was nod excitedly, because she was still reeling over the fact that that nickname was honestly so great. Pelly? That was so cute, she couldn't even. Cute boy giving her a cute nickname, what could be better? Well, he was laughing, and at first she thought maybe he was laughing at her, but it didn't sound quite like laughing-at laughter, which she was accustomed to and knew very well, but laughing-with laughter, and she blushed. Well, that was not the kind of laughter she was used to except from her friends, and even Eddie definitely laughed at her sometimes.

Penelope laughed then, not at him, but what he said. "I'm awful at being leader! I guess I can try, though! And maybe your lostness can counteract mine." The last time she had been the leader was when she met Eddie and that other girl back in the casino, and she lead her and her friend Harper in elementary school (except she was pretty sure Harper just followed her silliness around) otherwise, she was terrible at leading anything! Being spontaneous, yes, but not leadery! She gasped at him. "Oh gosh!! We could sleep on the grass and look up and pretend we can see stars, maybe!!" Shrugging, always trying to be optimistic, she shook her head. "I don't know how fun that would be, though! Especially with no blanket!!" Seriously, who could sleep without a blanket?

And she was holding his hand and trying not to think about it, hoping that if he was uncomfortable he would just let go, and she wouldn't mind. She was used to rejection. Oh!! She totally hadn't realized she hadn't gotten his name yet, whoops. Holding hands with people you didn't even know the names of, A+ work Penelope. "Omg!! That's so cool. Mine are PHD, like the degree I'm never gonna get." She blushed, looking away from him, hoping he wouldn't think that was stupid.

Looking around at the pathway, she settled down a little bit, not letting go of his hand. "I think so! We'll find our way out of here eventually!!" She wasn't so sure, but she kind of liked holding his hand and it totally wasn't weird, right? Oh my god wait. Not letting go, she skipped over to the side where she saw the cutest daisies. "Look at these!!! My sister's name is Daisy!! They're so pretty."

Penelope waved her other hand. "Oh, Baum's a lot of fun!! Some of the classes are hard, but there's tons of help and stuff!! My friend Eddie tutors in the library, since he's a big nerd and everything. And sometimes people like to gossip a lot. But it's a wonderful school!!!" Starting back on the path, she shrugged, blushing and looking away from him. "I'll be your friend if you want me to!!!" Oh gosh, why did she say that??

Okay, but, that could not be true! "Pfft, I bet you're great leader, dude." Anyone had the ability to become a great leader, in Parker's opinion. Maybe except for him, but that was more because he was okay with just chilling and going with wherever life took him, not because he believed he lacked qualities of a leader. "It has to be like...impossible to get anymore lost. And yeah, putting our lostness together could maybe make us not lost? That'd be cool." Wait, didn't people say "two wrongs don't make a right"? Well, those people were just going to have to wrong today, because two losts were going to equal to an oriented person!

"Pretend they could see stars". Ugh, Parker sighed and rolled his eyes. It was the one thing he hated about being in a city. Like, dude, come on , stars! Don't hide out just because the city also shines bright. Parker recalled how he would sleep out in his backyard as a kid in the rickety hammock strung between the two trees on their small neighborhood lot. Even though it was fenced in and they lived in a gated community, Parker's parents would always yell at him about how idiotic it was. Man, they would have eaten their words if they could see how amazing the late night sky looked. "Dude, nothing compares to sleeping under the stars, though. If you can't see the stars, there's like, no point in sleeping outside." No stars meant staring at an empty black sky, and that was just depressing. And not having a blanket? Yeah, do not sign Parker the fuck up. "I could never sleep without a blanket?" Chuckling, Parker said, "It could be over one hundred degrees and I would still want a blanket. It's the only thing to keep you safe from the monsters, dude." Even though Parker was a senior and totally did not believe in monsters under the bed, he did feel safer being under a thick comforter whenever the closet door was left cracked.

Initials that spelt things out or were abbreviations for other things were always fantastic, and Parker had to tell Pelly that her initials were definitely cool. "Dude, that's great! And the only doctorate I'm getting is one in rock and roll." Parker took his hand back for a brief second to flash finger guns and wink, and then transition into a rocking air guitar. Then, he realized what he had done. Parker had taken his hand back and now did not know whether or not to grab her hand again? Would it be weird? Would it be weird to not hold her hand again? Logically, they had literally just met, so maybe it was too soon to do any sort of hand holding, but it had just been innocent and chill, so what did it hurt? Parker just decided "lol why not" and resumed holding Pelly's hand, because it would really suck if he accidentally hurt her feelings. He couldn't go around hurting peoples' feelings before he even started classes, that would be so lame.

Parker smiled as Penelope told him about how her sister was named Daisy. Part of him wanted to say, "like the duck?", but he instead said, "Cool! I have a sister named Lucy. She always thought I was really annoying." Age gaps were probably the thing to blame, but considering how his brothers treated him, Parker had just always assumed Lucy hated him simply because she wanted to. Glancing around to see if anyone was around, Parker leaned over the fence meant to protect the flowers and plucked two daisies, tucking one behind his ear and the other behind Pelly's. "Look, we match!"

Baum seemed pretty chill, thank god. He hadn't really looked into it as much as he told his parents he did when trying to find a way out of Michigan. What if he had enrolled in a super brainy school?? That would be the worst, because Parker was nowhere close to being brainy. But Pelly just said she had a friend who tutored, which was neat. At his old school, teachers would stay an hour after the school closed and you could go see whoever you wanted to for extra help. Even though he should have gone to it, Parker never did because he didn't understand the point of trying to learn something from the same person who couldn't explain it the right way the first time. No offense to the teachers, of course, but they just didn't always teach to Parker the right way. "Do you know how the music classes are?" As much as Parker loved singing and playing the guitar, he really wanted to start learning the piano so he could write his own music, even though he knew deep down that was kind of ridiculous. There was no way he had the talent or creativity to write a whole song, but, hey, it was always cool to try something new. A smile spread across Parker's face as Pelly said she would be his friend. Sweet! "Dude, Pelly, yes. Plus you get the awesome title of being my first friend in New York City."

now i don't know where i am
& i don't know where i've been

Penelope blushed and flailed her arm in an attempt at a dismissive wave. "Noooo. I'm the woooorst." Her vocie was kind of mumbly and kind of slurred and she was pretty sure this boy was trying to murder her with his cuteness. Like, it had to be illegal to be that cute. He needed a warning label or something!!! "It's like... a double negative?? Or something mathy." She'd have to ask Eddie about that later.

Wow, when he started talking about sleeping under the stars... Penelope couldn't help but picture them on some cute little hill somewhere, and just looking up at the stars like in The Lion King and just talking for hours and wow she needed to calm down because her heart was beating dangerously fast, and all she could do was nod at him at the speed of light in agreement, but then words came so she just let them pass through her barely existant filter. "My friend Estie put little star stickers on my friend Eddie's ceiling, it was so stellar and I think I want to do that also." Oh man, this boy didn't know about Stellar yet. Just he wait.

!!!!!!!!!!!! Blanket!!!! "That is literally my thoughts exactly!!! Like, how am I supposed to keep my toes if there's no blanket to protect them??" She wasn't making sense, probably, but she was just so full of "same" that she couldn't deal with it very well. "They're also great for being cute and comfy and also snuggly." Oh god why did she say that!! Her heart eyes were spreading to her mouth, and she needed to stop exCEPT.

Penelope was kind of sad when he let go of her hand, but she definitely clutched her chest as if he had actually shot her, because he basically did with that and the wink. Mm whatcha say was playing in the background of her mind AND THEN he grabbed her hand again and she was definitely flying, probably, like. Oh wow. He was holding her hand, which they had been doing, but like he initiated it this time and it was like ohmygod yep he was definitely trying to kill her, this was an assassination attempt, sos. ALSO, WAS HE SERIOUS ABOUT THE ROCK 'N' ROLL THING???

And then, as if to keep going, #relatable, he lamted his sibling troubles and was Penelope squeezing his hand? Yeah, she loosened up a bit, blushing hardcore. "Haha, all my siblings think I'm annoying. But like... one is ten years older than me, one is mostly just a meanie, and Daisy is okay sometimes. I think it's just because we have different interests and they're more like my parents and I'm just the odd one out." Oh gosh, she didn't want to be sad talking about her family, but here she was.

BUt the sadness soon left her body when he plucked the flowers and placed one behind her ear and her heart was gonna beat out of her chest and she was most definitely dreaming, this perfect boy couldn't actually be existing and holding her hand, and she j u s t. Her cheeks were super pink and she was bright and smiling and THEN HE ASKED ABOUT MUSIC CLASSES!!!! "You like music?? I also like music!!!! I play guitar and uke and stuff!!!!!" Okay, chill, you weren't answering the question. "They're pretty great!! My friend Eddie's cousin Shelly is the T.A. and she gives lessons after school and it's really cool because she's in a real life rock band!!!" OKay, chill, chill, everything was fine, don't lose it.

AND THEN.

Somehow increasing the brightness and smileyness, he totally accepted her IRL friend request and she just !!!! "Omg, really??? That's so great!!!! Thank you for being so rad, wow!! Welcome to New York City!!!" She was just waiting to wake up disappointed at this point. Seriously, there was no way.

As a little kid, one of the many things Parker had been denied because it wasn't "macho" were those little star stickers that you stuck on your ceiling. They would glow green, so not totally accurate, but did it matter to a young Parker? Nope! Lucy had them for a while, so of course Parker would try to sneak into bed with her (before he began to realize what shits his siblings were) but she would always wake up and yell at him, alerting the whole house to how much of a wimp Parker was. So when Pelly mentioned wanting to put star stickers on her ceiling, Parker instantly knew they were going to be best friends.

Laughing, Parker looked at Penelope and said, "No way, Pelly! I wanted those little stickers all the time when I was little." Then a thought crossed his head....how was short little Pelly supposed to reach her ceiling? "But how is a short little thing like yourself supposed to reach the ceiling?" Okay, so maybe his filter had deteriorated today. Parker patted her on the top of her head for good measure, chuckling. Maybe they could go out to a store that sold little ceiling star stickers and get some, and he could use all six feet four inches of awesomeness to decorate her ceiling, and then they could wait for the stars to get some glowing power, turn off the lights and lay back on her bed to see them glow.

Whoa there friend, you may need to slow down. Not able to stop the blush that crept onto his cheeks at that thought, Parker squelched the urge to tell her that plan. That would be way too forward, after all. Instead, he decided to be forward in a different way. With an evil grin planted on his face, Parker said "It would be a shame if a monster happened to getcha!" As he said "getcha", Parker grabbed Penelope's side and tickled her a little, not able to keep it up as he was too busy doubling over in laughter. "Oh man, dude."

After that ordeal was over, they continued to walk down the path. Was it possible for them to have anything else in common? There hadn't been someone back at his old school that Parker had ever felt super familiar with, yet he had just met this girl and he already felt like they were becoming fast pals. To make matters even better, Parker felt her squeeze his hand in sympathy as he complained about his douchey siblings, and then she went on to say that not only did she have issues with her siblings, but she was the odd one out in her family???

What?! Seriously, no way. This was a little scary. What kind of chance was this? Like, whoa, dude. Parker chuckled darkly; "Accepting parents? What are thooose?" Man it really sucked that she knew how Parker felt about his family, but it was nice to know he now had someone to talk to. "I grew up in a family of famous UFC fighters, but would rather visit gardens like this than even watch a fight." You could always feel the violence and aggression that seeped off of the fighting rings, and it set Parker on edge like nothing else.

Pelly just had to know all the cool people at Baum. Man, was Parker lucky to meet her before he started classes. And she also played guitar??? OH MAN! Parker just about lost his shit. "NO WAY!! I play guitar too!!" Could this day get any better? Well, they could find a way out, but that meant less time talking to Penelope, so. And the TA at Baum was in a rock band? Holy fucking shit. Holy fucking shit. Parker was in a dream. Any minute, one of his jerk brothers would dump a bucket of ice water on his head, waking him up from this heaven his brain had managed to create. "Seriously, a rock band? That's my number one dream in life." Parker waited for the ice to splash onto his face.

now i don't know where i am
& i don't know where i've been

Oh gosh, he was too cute for wor- Whoa. WHOA. Rude, much? No, Penelope wasn't even mad, but she totally pouted at him after he patted her head. "Well... at least I can jump on the bed without hitting my head on the ceiling, super tall person!" She reached up with her free hand and patted his head, not even having to stand on her tippy toes, HA. How did he like them apples?

LORD. She flinched away, laughing, saying "stoooop!" but not meaning it. Truth be told, Penelope loved getting tickled and tickle fights and thought they were the cutest thing ever. Speaking of tickle fights... revenge! She quickly got his sides while he was busy doubled over laughing. "Ha, dude! I'll give you a reason to laugh!"

The whole family talk kind of sobered her and took the edge off of her triumphant pride, and she was still smiling at his "what are thoooose" reference, but feeling kind of sad. "Nice siblings? What are thooooose?" she added, trying not to be sad, but she sighed. "Yeah, my whole family do smart stuff and athletic stuff and I always like art stuff and music stuff better." A+ explanation, but it kind of proved her point. Daisy meant well when she corrected her grammar, but she the fact that she knew she'd be doing it right now if she were here bummed her out, and she touched the daisy on her head in a sad, thoughtful kind of way.

BUT that all CHANGED. Because Parker played guitar too!!! "Seriously?? That's so cool!! I think... we might be the same person, or we have a psychic connection. What am I thinking about right now?" It'd probably be whatever he said, but that was fine by her, since she was mostly joking. "Yeah!! I don't remember the name, but she usually hangs out in the music room after school if you want to talk to her about it and stuff!" Speaking of dreams, she was still pretty sure she was in one and she did not actually just meet the cute boy version of her who was probably a lot cooler but!!!

Things Parker loved in life: pranking and tickling people. Things Parker did not love: getting tickled. It wasn't that he despised tickle fights or thought they were dumb; Parker just had ultra sensitive sides and dissolved into a puddle of gasping breaths and laugh cramps any time someone even nudged him near the ribs. As he was laughing after tickle attacking Penelope, he himself became victim to the tickle monster and nearly fell on the ground in surprise. Honestly, it was the worst reflex in the word. Her hands found his sides and he immediately went to jerk back, only falling into deeper tickles and was unable to tell her to stop between gasping for breath and laughing. After she had stopped, Parker caught his breath again; "That wasn't cool, dude!" But to be fair, he had done the same thing to her, so he kind of deserved it. Note to self, Penelope was great at tickling so maybe he should refrain from initiating tickle wars in the future.

Parker thought about his brothers, Liam and Samuel. Liam had just signed a year long contract and had his first big fight coming up soon. He only knew this because someone from back home had mentioned it, expecting that it meant Parker would be home for the weekend to watch the fight. Parker didn't have the heart to tell his old friend that his family hadn't even extended a ticket his way or mentioned the fight in general. Lucy was the most hurtful; she had been winning a lot lately, which led to more press conferences. During these interviews, questions about her family were asked and she never even mentioned Parker. One interviewer even asked how many siblings she had and Lucy had replied, "just two older brothers." It was impossible to pretend it didn't hurt, impossible to ignore that his family was ignoring him. Samuel was quickly becoming his favorite, even though that was a very generous word to use. A day earlier Samuel had sent Parker an email asking how the city was and if he needed anything. It was short and brief, almost like Samuel felt it was a necessity to reach out to his youngest brother. Parker hadn't responded yet. "That's just how it is for me, minus the smart stuff. All my siblings are total meatheads." If college worked out, which hopefully it would, Parker would be the first in his family to go.

Penelope was totally right though, they definitely had to be the same person. Could he read her mind? Parker paused, pressing a finger to his temple, staring intently at Penelope. "Hmm...something about cheese? Queso, perhaps? Maybe....how awesome I am? Yeah, that's totally it." Parker was a pro at reading minds and Penelope should probably be nervous. "Okay but we have to play together sometime I haven't met anyone else here to play with yet. Will people think I'm a huge douche for playing in public somewhere on campus?" Not that Parker cared, because he was totally going to be that guy playing guitar somewhere. "Of course, I wouldn't play Wonderwall." Anything but that, though!!! Did Parker know anyone who actually liked that song in a non ironic way? The answer was a big fat no, because they would be lying if they said they did.

now i don't know where i am
& i don't know where i've been

Okay, Parker had the cutest laugh ever!!! It was so unfair, and it only got better after she started tickling him. His laughter gave her a ridiculous amount of heart eyes and she couldn't look at him in case he saw or something. Did heart eyes have visible symptoms? In any case, she was blushing at this point and dying so she decided to stop and smell the roses, literally. But she had to whip around and judge him for a second before sticking her tongue out. "You started it, mister!!!" But she couldn't stay mad at that face, especially when she was never really mad at it to begin with. Cute people. Got her every time.

Penelope looked at him, very serious and understanding what it was like being different from your whole family, but in an instant she thought of something and started giggling uncontrollably, holding her stomach as if she was being tickled again. But she wasn't being tickled, she was being insensitive, and she felt super guilty. "Oh gosh, I'm so sorry..." she said, mortified. "I just... I just pictured your family as like people with chickens and steaks as heads, because meatheads, and just..." The picture was too funny and she cracked another smile, covering it with her mouth. [b]"I'm sorry, oh gosh, I'm so dumb sometimes." She hoped Parker wouldn't think she was mean, because she thought he was totally cute and awesome and sweet and...

Suddenly he was touching a finger to her temple and she definitely wasn't breathing while he was staring at her, and she was staring back like a deer in headlights, frozen in place. And then she gasped as he totally got what she was thinking right. "Omg!!! I can't believe you got it!!!!" she gushed, clapping her hands excitedly. This was crazy... whoa, okay, she totally just admitted she was thinking about him, whoops. "I was thinking about how cheesy it is that you're so awesome." Great save, Penelope. Wait, was he reading her mind this whole time??? Oh no, nope, nada, no way, she had to control her thoughts now which was extremely difficult and the worst and just - Did he just suggest they play together????? In public???

"Oh gosh, I would love to!! I'm not that great though. I'm like... I don't know..." And now she was a stammering, blushing mess and she needed to get it together. "Wait, why wouldn't you play Wonderwall?" In one of her many notebooks, she had a list of songs that made her cry without hesitation, and Wonderwall was one of them. Yeah, it was cheesy and overplayed, but she lived for cheesy and overplayed.
